On Sunday, the St. Louis Blues were at the Bell Centre and the Montreal Canadiens were finishing their second back-to-back of the week. The Habs played well with the exception of a problematic start to the second period. The result was a 4-3 loss.
Here’s some things worth noting.
A couple of non-Olympians played well.
Cole Caufield scored again last night – another pretty snipe – and made it 11 straight games with a point. He’s at more than a point-per-game clip. Lane Hutson also scored again.
Is Team USA really leaving these guys off the Olympic roster because they are small?
The second period brain cramp reared its head.
With two back-to-backs this week, you can forgive the Canadiens for taking a couple of shifts off in the second period. At least it wasn’t the whole period, but it was the difference in the game. Learning how to simplify when exhausted might be something the kids still need to learn.
The Bolduc-Mailloux storyline was a little dull.
Who won the trade? Too early to tell, but my prediction is that it will be a sleepy storyline over time. It was in this one with the most exciting bit being a puck to Mailloux’s face.

Since watching Mailloux in the OHL, my view has always been that he would top out as a third pair defender who could help your power play. That’s not a bad outcome, I guess.
In the meanwhile, Bolduc has had ups and downs in his short stay so far in Montreal. He did assist on the Hutson goal, so I guess we’ll give him the win in the first confrontation. My guess is he tops out as a middle six player once he’s able to improve his defensive game.
That was a decent audition from Brayden Schenn.
Who knows if he is a HuGo target, but I suspect he could help the Habs. They could use the depth for sure. God knows all of Anderson, Evans, Gallagher and Veleno are seeing too much ice right now.
I like how Schenn plays with Holloway. Perhaps he could help one of the kids in Montreal in a similar way.
The Habs lost a winnable game last night, and they will regret that as the tough December schedule continues.
