With the Olympics in the rear view, the Montreal Canadiens were finally back in action on Thursday night with the New York Islanders visiting. The result was a 4-3 overtime loss.
Here’s what caught my eye.
You don’t trade a player like Noah Dobson.
I’m being a little catty now, but seriously. He’s a big and mobile right shot defenseman who can play in all situations. With the trade deadline a week away, half of the teams in playoff position are looking for a right shot D. Heck, the Habs should probably be one of them.

GM Kent Hughes made his move to fill an important role in the summer, and Dobson has just improved with every passing game in a Montreal sweater.

While I’m on Dobson, I like him with Hutson. Hutson is better on his strong side. Figure out the rest.
Of course, the Islanders could live with trading Dobson when they knew who they would draft first overall. He was alright last night too.
I’m not a big fan of the FOGO.
They probably should have avoided the overtime. They were undisciplined and allowed two penalties that tied the game. Then they weren’t able to hold the lead when New York pulled their goalie. But then they lost a draw in the OT and it was over.

I get the idea. Their best face-off guy wins the draw and they get possession, then he gets off for the better offensive option. I know many teams do it, but I’ve never loved it. I find it awkward and the switch out can become too important… too much the focal point. I wouldn’t do it when Suzuki is the other forward, for sure. But that’s just me.
Time is short for Laine
It seems like just a waiting game now.

Whether they just want to give Laine a chance to play or they hope to turn another deal and need the cap space, it seems like the Canadiens are determined to move Patrik Laine. The Friday before the trade deadline is as good a time as any.
